Mentor Teacher With Multi-Level Experience
I taught elementary school while simultaneously acting as an active Assistant Principal. This was a fifth-grade position. Most of my experience was at the eighth-grade level in all subjects. I taught citizenship skills to applicants for American citizenship, and Ed. Psych. to pre-teachers entering the profession. As a mediator I taught conflict resolution skills to adults in a court setting. I received national recognition for the latter.
While teaching at an air force base, I introduced many of our troops to the basics of American democracy.
My methodologies ranged from those taught by Madeline Hunter to those instructed by James Banks of the National Council for the Social Studies. Specifically, concept teaching presented to a group followed by application, evaluation/monitoring and follow-up. Cooperative learning found me as an instructor for a national group. I used small group instruction when there was a project to teach.
My reading and math students on an agerage increased their comprehension levels from 2 to 4 years depending on where they began and the problems they were having. Although not a Special Ed. teacher, I mainstreamed these students with other students at the middle school level, and the advance in social skills learning was significant.
Many times my special ed. students outperformed their fellow students.
